In het meedogenloos eerlijke partyspel genaamd Shit Happens, wordt het leven in al zijn weerzinwekkende glorie omarmd en in een komisch jasje gestoken. Met kaarten die variëren van ranking 1 (niet erg) tot 100 (heel erg), daagt dit spel spelers uit om de ergheid van verschillende ongewenste situaties te beoordelen en ze op hun ‘lane of pain’ te plaatsen.

Bij aanvang van het spel krijgt iedere speler een set van drie kaarten. Deze kaarten worden vervolgens gerangschikt van minst erg naar het absolute dieptepunt van ellende. Hieruit ontstaat de persoonlijke basis van elke speler, een visuele weergave van hun eigen ‘lane of pain’. Het is een pittige keuze om te beslissen of het zien van je vader in z’n nakie minder erg is dan bijvoorbeeld elke nacht in bed plassen.

De uitdaging gaat verder wanneer de speler aan de rechterkant een nieuwe kaart voorleest zonder de rangschikking ervan te onthullen. Hier komt het strategische element om de hoek kijken. Welke plek in je ‘lane of pain’ is geschikt voor deze nieuwe onfortuinlijke situatie? Is het erger dan die keer dat je telefoon in het toilet viel maar niet zo erg als een publieke blunder die viral ging?
