In SpellBook heeft elke speler, vergezeld door een vertrouweling, een grimoire en verzamelt Materia om spreuken te beheersen en hun vertrouweling te voeden. Het spel biedt vooraf getekende sets spreuken voor gebruik in de vroege rondes, maar al snel beginnen spelers willekeurig spreuken te trekken of hun eigen spreukencombinaties te creëren die gemeenschappelijk zijn voor alle spelers. Elke spreukencombinatie geeft een effect dat de rest van het spel aanhoudt, en hoe inventiever de combinatie, hoe krachtiger het effect.

Naarmate de rondes vorderen, wordt het spel elke keer een andere ervaring, met meer dan 2.100 mogelijke spreukencombinaties.

Het spel eindigt zodra de grimoire van een tovenaar compleet is of een vertrouweling volledig gevoed is, waarna de speler met de meeste punten wint. SpellBook bevat een solomodus die nauw aansluit bij de multiplayer-ervaring, en biedt een hoog niveau van uitdaging en een uitstekende manier om de spelregels te leren.
