Het was even wachten op een nieuwe release want 4 jaar kregen wij geen nieuws dat er een nieuwe variant op de markt zou komen. Maar gelukkig is het zo ver want wij kunnen u verklappen het is een stukje vakwerk wat Bollinger laat zien met deze rosé. Het Champagne huis is opgericht in het jaar 1829 en maakt sinds dien de allerbeste kwaliteit, en dat staat erg hoog in het vaandel bij Bollinger. Ze zijn gevestigd in het kleine plaatsje Ay waar de mooiste Champagne's vandaan komen. Achter het huis liggen op de berg de wijngaarden voor deze La Grande Année 2018, Bollinger kiest ervoor om deze Vintage te maken met zevenenzestig procent Pinot Noir en de rest wordt enkel aangevuld met Chardonnay. Omdat de druiven echt ware parels moeten zijn zijn de druiven afkomstig uit maar liefst 21 verschillende Cru's. Gewoon weg de beste en oudste wijngaarden van Champagne Bollinger.

De oogst van de La Grande Année Rosé 2018

De wijngaarden liggen in de gemeente Ay en Verzenay voor de rode Pinot Noir druif. Deze bevinden zich achter het huis en als je bij Bollinger in de tuin staat kun je de prachtige wijngaarden al zien. De Chardonnay wordt wat zuidelijker verbouwd om precies te zijn in Oiry, want daar komen de allerbeste Chardonnay trossen vandaan. De oogst geschied geheel met de hand en elke tros wordt met het oog gecontroleerd. Enkel de beste trossen worden in kleine houten kratjes gelegd en vervoerd naar Champagne Bollinger.

Houtlagering voor de La Grande Année Rosé 2018

Na de persing ondergaat deze La Grande Année Rosé 2018een fermentatie wat geheel wordt gedaan in kleine houten vaten. De vaten hebben een gemiddelde leeftijd van 20 jaar en geven de stijl aan deze Bollinger La Grande Année Rosé. Deze unieke techniek is waar Bollinger trots op is en vandaag de dag heeft men wel 3500 vaten waarop deze La Grande Année Rosé rijpt. Dan is het tijd om de bubbels op de fles te krijgen en hiervoor krijgt deze Champagne een lange kelder lagering met gist en suiker. De flessen rijpen maar liefst 84 maanden waardoor er zachte bubbels ontstaan die in de wijn wereld ook wel mousse wordt genoemd.

De geur en smaak van de Bollinger La Grande Année Rosé 2018

Ja na deze lange periode van vakmanschap is het tijd om te gaan genieten van dit spektakelstuk. Bij het inschenken zien we een prachtige kleur een rode roos met roze schitteringen. Deze kleur is verkregen omdat deze rosé is gemaakt met de rode La Côte aux Enfants, en dat maakt hem uniek in zijn soort. Met het oog zien we ook de zachte en zeer verfijnde mousse die onze zintuigen laten prikkelen. Met de neus boven het glas ruiken we nuances van zwarte bessen, mooie tonen van citrus fruit, verse granen en een beetje munt. In de mond is het echt een feest, de zachte mousse prikkelt onze tong waarbij smaken vrij komen van aardbeien, besjes en wat bramen. Later op de tong nuances van vanille, citrus tonen en wat grapefruit wat alles afmaakt. Ja heeft u wat te vieren, of misschien ook wel niks met deze La Grande Année Rosé 2018 is het altijd feest.

Truly embracing life along the Camino de Santiago

The Way of the Wind: Embracing Life While Walking the Camino do Santiago, by John W. Pearson, 2021, recounts one man’s experiences while walking the Camino de Santiago, a thirty-five day, five hundred mile walking journey from St. Jean Pied de Port in France to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. The journey follows a path tread by literally millions of pilgrims, or “pelegrinos”, as they seek to find something very person in the experience. The book is a travelogue recounting the miles of the daily trek, the people, stories, dining, lodging, and local services encountered along the way. There are a series of black and white photographs accenting the dialogue which give the reader a sense of involvement in the story. A nice touch was a simple map at the beginning to orient the reader along each day’s travel. I absolutely loved this book. It was enjoyable to read and I found myself slowing down near the end of the book to better savor the details. It warrants a double read to go back and let those early experiences soak in a bit more. I found the book to be educational, as I learned a lot about the historical significance of the route of the Camino, as well as specific landmarks along the way, such as a 10th century Roman bridge dwarfed by a new modern bridge overhead. I imagined myself walking along that ancient roadway, imagining what a pilgrim in 1300 must have thought. The dialogue is playful, recount with hours of walking, lively dinners, and crowded “albergues” (think camp dorm rooms with bunk beds). All was not rosy along the Camino. The narrative relates the aches of sore feet, legs, backs; the challenges of securing lodging and laundry; meanings lost in translation; inclement weather and treacherous roadways. Often mentioned are markers to honor the fallen dead along the Camino. About 2/3rds through the book, John recants his very personal reason for going on the pilgrimage, which he describes as “The Whale in the Room”, referring to the motivation of Captain Ahab in Moby Dick. His honesty and vulnerability bring the entire journey into focus. He brings the reader to the Cruz de Ferro, where pilgrims have stopped for millennium with their deepest meanings. I have known John Pearson since 1975, when we met in High School in El Paso, Texas. However, through the years, I moved and we lost close touch. There were many parts of this book of which I did not know the details. John’s story is very powerful, and will impact the reader deeply. Once you have read the book, you will have a clear idea of the experience, and can judge for yourself if the Camino de Santiago is calling you. For me, I found the book asking me not “WILL you go?”, but “WHEN will you go?”

Good book …but some comments….

I too, have to agree with another reviewer giving four stars. I also noticed his comments on beautiful women and wondered how “Leslie” at home felt about it as well. And the wine he mentions far outweighed any reference at all to the necessary need for water on such a walk. Comments in the last few chapters on walkers who only walked the last few miles seemed a bit snarky. But he made me laugh out loud several times and I found it to be an enjoyable, entertaining read. I can only hope Leslie, at home, felt the same ! Having read many books on the Camino, this was a good read. His tragic experience earlier in life makes me give him a hug and big thumbs up for finding meaning in life and going for it. Thanks, John.

I felt like I had walked the entire Camino with John. I was nervous when he was nervous, laughed when he laughed, and cried when he cried. He absolutely captures the entire Camino, right to the end. I learned so much, not only historically, but also emotionally and spiritually. When I got near the end of the book, I didn't want to finish it and put it down, because I didn't want the journey to end!!! But I'm glad that I picked it up the next day and finished it, because the best part was at the end. The emotions were overwhelming to me. Great book. Now, I just have to put on my shoes and go (but not without proper preparations!!!)

The Best Narrative about the Real Camino

I have read many, many books about the Camino de Santiago and this is by far the best. It is so clearly written that I felt myself walking along with John Pearson. His description of every aspect of the Way is accurate and wonderful to read. I only walked the last 100 km, but feel now like I walked the whole way and enjoyed it without the blisters! If I were younger, I would definitely walk the entire way but am so glad John wrote his experience so that I at least can imagine what it was like. Thank you for the Most Excellent Book!
