Zij gebruiken de olie al eeuwen om mee te koken en als verzorgingsproduct. Traditioneel is het producent van arganolie een vrouwentaak, en daardoor kan de olie nu ook op grote schaal geproduceerd en vergroot worden daarmee hun zelfstandigheid en sociale status. De productie gaat nog voor een groot deel met de hand, wat zorgt voor werkgelegenheid en dus meer inkomen. Sinds 2011 is de coöperatie waarmee FairSquared samenwerkt Fairtrade gecertificeerd.
