If the crystals accidentally get on your clothes, simply wipe them off with water. To maintain the ball's elasticity, store it in a sealed container when not in use.
Curious about the mechanism? The granules of the bouncy ball primarily consist of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), a water-soluble polymer known for its elastic attributes.
Polymers are extensive, intertwined chains of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms. When the granules become moist, their surfaces gradually dissolve, causing them to slightly expand and become adhesive. The lengthy polymers entangle with one another, effectively binding the granules together within the mold.
The bounciness of the balls arises from the elasticity of the PVA material, enabling it to revert to its original shape after being compressed or stretched.
This elasticity stems from the structure of the polymer chains. The extended, intertwined chains create extra space around them, akin to the gaps between strands of pasta in a bowl. As the ball hits the ground, the resulting force compresses the polymers more tightly into these gaps.
However, a threshold is reached where the bonds between the polymers can no longer compress further. At this point, the polymers start expanding, discharging the absorbed force and propelling the ball off the ground, thus causing it to bounce upward.
