Why it matters
Why choose a non-drop Christmas tree
The traditional Christmas tree sheds. In a warm room, needles start dropping after a short time.
The Nordmann Fir does not do this. Its needles are wide, soft, and rounded at the tip. They hold on to the branch even if the tree dries out. The dense foliage stays thick and the classic shape holds from the day you put it up to the day you take it down.
A non-drop Christmas tree is easier to live with. It looks better for longer. And when you take it down, the cleanup is a fraction of the work.

About Nordmann Fir
The Nordmann Fir is a native of the Caucasus mountain range. It was brought to the UK as an ornamental tree and took off as a Christmas tree in the 1990s. It has outsold the Norway Spruce every year since.
The tree has a natural conical shape. It grows with a wide base and tapers to a point. The branches are horizontal and sturdy. They hold heavy ornaments without drooping. The foliage is thick and even from the ground up. This is the tree that looks good in Christmas photographs.
The dark green needles are the key difference. They are flat, not sharp. Soft to the touch. The tips are rounded. They stay on the branch because the Nordmann Fir evolved to hold its foliage through harsh winters. That same quality gives it exceptional needle retention indoors.
With a water-holding stand and a spot away from direct heat, a Nordmann Fir will stay fresh and green for five weeks or more.

Tree care
Keeping your tree looking its best
Water every day
Stand in a reservoir from day one. A large tree can take a litre a day. Do not let it run dry.
Away from heat
Keep clear of radiators, underfloor heating, and log burners. A cool corner is ideal.
Cut the base
Cut half an inch from the trunk before putting in the stand. Opens the wood so it can drink.
Let it acclimatise
Coming off a cold van in winter, give it an hour outside before bringing it indoors.
Common questions
Frequently asked questions
How long does a non-drop Christmas tree last indoors?
With a water-holding stand and daily top-ups, a Nordmann Fir will stay fresh for five weeks or more. Most households put it up in late November and take it down in early January without issue.
Is a Nordmann Fir the same as a non-drop Christmas tree?
Yes. Nordmann Fir is the variety. The soft, rounded needles grip the branch and do not fall the way a Norway Spruce does. When people ask for a non-drop tree, they are asking for Nordmann Fir.
Does a non-drop Christmas tree have a scent?
The Nordmann Fir has a mild, fresh scent. Nothing like the strong pine of a Norway Spruce. If scent is the priority, the Spruce is the right choice. If needle retention matters more, the Nordmann wins every time.
Can I put decorations on a non-drop Christmas tree?
Yes. The Nordmann Fir has sturdy branches. The branches hold their shape under the weight of ornaments and do not droop. Heavy glass decorations, wrapped presents on lower branches, string lights: the tree handles all of it.
What stand do I need for a Nordmann Fir?
A water-holding stand with a reservoir of at least two litres. We sell stands to fit every size we supply, from small trees up to 12ft.
