CD Edition of The New Happy in fold out card wallet

If you want to know the secret to happiness, look no further than transcendental psychedelic pop outfit Glass Vaults. The New Zealand via Berlin band led by Richard Larsen, Rowan Pierce and Carpark Record’s signee Bevan Smith, create a unique concoction of joyously uplifting pleasure in their sonic laboratory and The New Happy is the result – an exploration of the euphoric sensations associated with Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR).

Glass Vaults’ sophomore LP was recorded and mixed to seduce. ASMR, otherwise known as a “brain orgasm,” is an aurally triggered euphoric experience characterised by a tingling in the scalp which travels down the neck and spine and The New Happy was specifically mixed to elicit an ASMR effect. “We focused on retaining short high frequency transients and worked on modulating and panning certain sounds to induce goose bumps and shivers when listened through headphones,” Smith explains of the record’s atmospheric ambiance. “It looks not to emulate a sexual high, but a deeper, euphoric wave, that washes over the body in feelings of comfort and security… a new kind of happy.”

Written in the band’s Te Aro studio, a light-filled space in a semi-abandoned office building in Wellington NZ’s Central Business District, the band set to recording their dreamy pop grooves over three days in the capital city’s blue-fronted Blue Barn studios. While Larsen and Pierce both come from a visual/ performing arts background, it has been the fusing of Smiths sonic genius that led to the experimentation  with both the emotional and scientific approach to creating glorious music.

“We have always considered Glass Vaults to be an extension of our larger artistic interests and process,” Richard reveals. “One thing which has never changed is our goal of creating music that fully immerses those who experience it. We’re creating worlds and stories to fully transcend the audience.”

Whether it’s capturing the feelings brought about by recollections of the pair’s pre-teen days chatting with friends on MSN and downloading music from Napster (‘Savant’) sitting on Manhattan rooftops (‘Brooklyn’) or watching the sun rise after a long cold winter (‘The New Happy’), each song is a shot of serotonin to the synapses. Speaking of the title-track Larsen says; “I was interested in creating the feeling of the classic New Zealand summer. When I listen to this song I imagine a Fruju iceblock advert shown there in the 90s. Young beautiful people jumping off a boat, eating ice blocks and singing “Ooh Aah!”

Not stopping at physical pleasure, The New Happy’s absorbing soundscapes delve deeper into the unconscious by exploring nostalgia and dreams; ‘Rewind’ was inspired by a dream of hitting rewind on life whilst ‘Mind Reader’ refers to the way dreams linger, well into waking hours. “While writing the album I was having the most intense dreams and was curious about exploring the intangible space between waking and sleeping, where reality is hard to decipher.” Larsen adds, I became obsessed with my subconscious and began listening to it more and more.

Having already produced a stream of releases and performed blissful live shows, The New Happy sees the band peeling away at a once hazy veneer to reveal vibrant and colourful majestic pop moments crafted with precision and clarity. “The New Happy is a sonic departure for us… where once we would have relied on large crystalline reverbs, this record takes cues from intimate spaces, percussive rhythm and groove to elicit a different kind of transcendence.” Glass Vaults’ unique brand of dreamy psychedelic pop has wowed capacity crowds everywhere from drained swimming pools and humid forests, to New Zealand, Australia, and the U.S.A.

Good value
Color: Black
These arrived a day early and I am currently wearing them as I write this. So far these aren't bad and I'm having a hard time complaining about what you get for the price. I got these for around $30 and the fact these have touch controls and an app you can use to adjust the EQ, the touch settings, and other things already makes them a good deal. The main reason I bought these is because I needed a pair of open earbuds for work so I can listen to music while still being able to hear what's going on around me. The sound quality isn't terrible but it isn't going to blow you away either. It's kind of like having 2 cheap but decent Bluetooth speakers strapped to your ears. Out of the box they might sound a tad muddy but I like using the hip hop or electronic EQ settings to make them sound more clear with added bass. They don't sound as good as in-ear earbuds (mainly because the bass isn't as rumbly) but they still sound really good, especially for the price. Once you change the EQ settings they have good clarity and you can hear the subtle nuances of each instrument. And although you can't really feel the rumble of the bass you can definitely hear it and most songs sound great on these in my opinion. I did notice that some songs with heavy sub bass sound kind of weird though. The touch controls work pretty well but hitting the right spot can be a little tricky especially when doing double taps. These also stay locked to your ears pretty well. You could headbang to some heavy metal music and these will not be sent into orbit. Some people say these are comfortable and you almost forget you're wearing them but I've had them on for about an hour and I can definitely still feel them. They aren't the most comfortable earbuds I've ever worn but they don't feel that bad either. I wore them at work most of the day and only my left ear started to feel slightly uncomfortable but I think that was just because the earbud needed to be adjusted a bit. The battery life is great and the case has fast charging which is convenient if you want to throw them in the case on your lunch break and get enough juice to last the rest of the day. The case is also smaller than I expected. I thought it would be bigger considering the size of the earbuds but it's literally the length of a toilet paper roll (i'm sick and have a roll laying on my bed next to the case) and it's about as wide as the upper part of your palm and as thick as a mcdonalds cheeseburger lol if you want a solid pair of open ear buds for work but aren't trying to spend a fortune these are a good option to consider. Just keep in mind that you aren't going to get super high quality studio level sound from these but that's not what they're made for anyway.

Soundcore V20i: Seamless Bluetooth Switching, Long Battery Life, No Drama
Color: Black
Alright… listen up, Amazonians. I don’t write reviews. I avoid them like I avoid assembling IKEA furniture without instructions. But these Soundcore V20i headphones dragged me in here against my will. I’ve spent enough money on headphones over the years to qualify for a small auto loan—Apple, Samsung, Bose… if it had a fancy box and a price tag that made me uncomfortable, I bought it. And yet somehow THESE are the ones that made me stop mid-day and go, “Wait… why do these work better than everything else I own?” Now let’s manage expectations before anyone accuses me of losing my mind: do they sound like you’re sitting front row at a live concert? No. Do the ear hooks feel like they could use a little more cushion? Yes. Do they have noise cancellation? Absolutely not—you will still hear your dog barking, your coworkers talking, and every bad decision echoing in your head. Are they waterproof? Also no. If you drop these in a pool, that’s on you, not Anker. BUT… these things have one superpower, and it’s the one feature that apparently every $200+ pair of headphones forgot to get right: they switch between my phone and computer like they’ve achieved enlightenment. I’m on my computer all day—calls, music, more calls, more music, repeat until I question my life choices. Before these headphones, switching devices felt like negotiating a hostage situation. “Why won’t you connect?” “Why are you connected to the wrong device?” “WHY ARE YOU CONNECTED TO THE NEIGHBOR’S TV??” With these? Call comes in—boom, switches instantly. Call ends—boom, right back to music. No button mashing, no Bluetooth menu gymnastics, no yelling into the void. It just works. The only thing I’ve used that even comes close is AirPods, but try using those outside the Apple ecosystem and suddenly you’re troubleshooting like it’s 2007 and you just installed a printer. These? They don’t care what you’re using. Windows? Cool. Samsung phone? Great. Chaos in your life? Handled. They’re comfortable, they don’t feel like they’re trying to burrow into your skull, and they actually stay on your ears when you move around like a normal human being instead of a statue. Oh—and the battery life? Ridiculous. I keep waiting for them to die and they just… don’t. At this point I’m convinced they’re powered by spite or dark magic. Are they perfect? No. Do they do the ONE thing I actually need better than anything else I’ve tried? Shockingly, yes. For this price, it’s honestly ridiculous. Anker really woke up and said, “What if we just made something that works… and didn’t charge a kidney for it?” Bold. Respect!

Surprisingly Good
Color: Black
I got these over a year ago for less than $25 and I’m surprised with how good they are. I needed something in a pinch just for calls and expected a product that would sound horrible when listening to music, but these inexpensive earphones sound pretty decent. They have an app that allows you to use different equalizer settings giving you rich sound and bass either using their presets or you can set custom EQ. I like that these are over the ear so you can enjoy your music and still be aware of your surroundings. They are light and comfortable, so much so that I almost forget I’m wearing them at times. The hook over ear design is secure enough that I don’t feel I have to adjust them often like earbuds that constantly feel like they’re going to fall out of my ears. You can also use the app to customize the touch features on each earpiece individually and there are lights on the earphones that you can turn on and off and set to different colours. The batteries last a long time, up to 8 hours on a full charge (when not using the lights feature) and they charge really quickly when you put them back in the case. The only thing I don’t like about them is you can’t tap them to answer calls, which is why I bought them. At least I haven’t been able to figure out how to get that to work. But other than that, I’m pretty satisfied with my purchase.

Indestructible apparently
Color: Blue
So I’m really clumsy and forgetful. I got these as a reward for not screwing up a cheap set for a month. Today I dropped the case next to my car but I was in a rush so I didn’t make sure I had both. When I got home, sure enough, one of them was sitting in the garage and I had definitely run over it. Let me just say, I am EXTREMELY impressed with the durability because I ran square over it and it works just fine. I gave them five stars for that but just know the case is not very secure. I’ll be putting a silicone tie over the case from now on. Sound quality and battery life are great and they look really nice. I also barely feel them on my ears and they don’t make me sore. Excellent product.

Great Price, Fit, Quality
Color: Black
Love these Open-Ear headphones. My previous earbuds were hurting my eardrums due to fitting inside my ear canals. These are more comfortable sitting outside of my eardrums. Great sound and fit for an affordable price. I use mine for exercising, walking, biking and they stay in place. Very pleased.
