The Raschen Ridge Estate Pinot Noir is a powerful, distinct and compelling wine. One of our greatest vineyard sites, the Raschen Ridge produces wines with hedonistic fruit, muscular mountain tannins, and dynamic energy.
The Raschen Ridge is a narrow, high elevation outcropping. The main, westerly section of the Ridge possesses ideal soil, a decomposed sandstone with the perfect mix of soil and rock. It’s exposed on all sides, and cold wind and fog buffet the vines. Follow the Ridge to its eastern end, however, and you’ll discover a different world. It’s more sheltered from the ocean influences, and the soil is a challenging, dense clay. Together these two terroirs result in a wine that seamlessly combines self-confidence with elegance, hedonism with complexity, pleasure with intrigue.
Henry Raschen (1854–1937) was a painter of the American West who lived on the ranch that is now Hirsch Vineyards. Old-timers called our ranch the Raschen Place, and Henry’s house stood here until 1954.
We have always loved a drought vintage, and dreaded them too. Droughts are a particular kind of torture for a farmer: waiting and counting every inch of rain, hoping for more, remaining unsatisfied. But they can result in deeply compelling wines, and 2022 was no exception.
The 2022 vintage was characterized by low yields and very even maturation, resulting in wines of great concentration but sadly very low volumes. Difficult spring weather reduced the crop to just 55% of normal for Pinot Noir, and 45% for Chardonnay.
The resulting wines are dense yet not tannic, with incredible fruit concentration. The summer was quite mild, and the light intensity was close to average. This kept tannins in balance, despite the drought conditions.
