Robert Fulford, D.O. (1905-1997) was an important, if enigmatic, figure in late twentieth-century osteopathy. Trained at the Kansas City School of Osteopathy and Surgery (class of 1941), he was a strong believer in the "triune" nature of man---physical, mental, and spiritual---and the importance of diagnosing and treating the whole person, not just the physical symptoms.

Dr. Fulford's career was a testament to this ideal, what A.T. Still called the philosopher physician. In the mid-1940s he studied cranial osteopathy with William Garner Sutherland and became a lifelong member (and one-time president) of The Cranial Academy. During the course of a practice that spanned six decades he explored a wide spectrum of scientific and philosophical ideas about the basis and mechanics of life. Nothing was off limits---field theory, Aryuvedic medicine, biomagnetics, psychological and subtle energy medicine, crystals. Always he followed Sutherland's advice to "dig on," integrating whatever was useful into the practice of what he termed "twenty-first century medicine."

Robert Fulford, D.O. and the Philosopher Physician is both an intellectual biography and a practical introduction to Dr. Fulford's methods of diagnosis and treatment. In addition to tracing the principal figures and ideas that influenced his thought, there are sample protocols of Fulford's history-taking, physical examination and general treatments, and exercises for learning to discern the human energy field ("etheric body") and treating with "intention."

Reviews

"This book is a scholarly but readable treatise designed to advise and inform. It rings true. I recognize much in the book of the gentle but enquiring man that I knew. There is no attempt to mystify or deify Fulford. On the contrary, Zach Comeaux has concentrated on the philosophy rather than the personality. He explains the concepts clearly, picks up loose ends and appears genuinely to want to pass on to us everything he knows. True to the example of Dr. Fulford himself, this is a faithful attempt to share with his colleagues the osteopathic insights that Zach Comeaux derived from the privilege of working so closely with this unique and enigmatic master of osteopathy."
—Nicholas Handoll, The Osteopath

"An interesting read for fans of osteopathy, its history, and its leading lights. It is a worthy tribute to the spirit of a man whose inquiring mind led him down wildly diverging paths in his endeavor to understand and treat the whole person."

Great for chewers
Color: Knuckle Bone, Size: XX-Large
I have a 13 month old 56 lb boxer/rottie mix who is a medium chewer and this bone is great for him. No splintering, doesn't make a mess, and hard enough to make him work without any danger of him breaking teeth, getting cut, or choking. We gave it to him a couple of weeks ago and based on wear I'm confident it will last him a long time (many months at least). I was a little hesitant about giving my animal a product that contained nylon, but after a scary experience giving a rawhide bone to a previous foster dog, I was told this was a much safer option and now I agree. This bone is very dense and very hard, so it makes an awful noise when my dog drops it on my hardwood floor. We are also careful to make sure he doesn't drop it on our bare toes, because that would be quite unpleasant. Be aware that the chewed edges also get really rough because of the way the bone wears, so they can become a magnet for dog hairs or fabric threads. This hasn't been a problem for us (we just encourage our pup to chew it on his bed and take it away from him when we are watching a movie so the noise isn't bothersome), but it is good to know. Update: We've had Winston for 5 months now and in that time he has gained 5 lbs of muscle. He loves his Nylabone! It is still going strong and I think he will be able to use this well through his one year adoptiversary. The only issue we have with this bone is that the edges can get sharp and sometimes will cut his mouth. He doesn't notice and just wants to keep chewing, but we usually take the bone away at that point for a bit. My boyfriend has taken the bone and used a power sander on it a few times now to remove all the sharp edges. We only have to to in once every couple of months but it makes a big difference.

The best toy my dog has
Color: Monster Bone, Size: XX-Large
Our lab mix is a very ambitious chewer - forget retrieving... he seems to think his "job" in life is to destroy things with his teeth. He's very methodical about it; he'll chew and chew and chew, targeting the object's weakest points, until all that remains is a littering of coin-sized remnants. He even started to make progress on his heavy duty black Kong within about a week. By the time he was about 8 months old, we figured out that the only toys he can be left alone with are the ones made by Nylabone. He has all their models: dinosaurs, rings, small bones, and branches. These Nylabone toys are a hard plastic that chips off in tiny little shards. He's happy because he feels like he's making progress (even though it takes him a long time to do so) and we're happy because the toys last a relatively long time and he can't swallow anything that might hurt him. He does leave tiny plastic shavings on the carpet, but we have to vacuum a lot anyways because of his fur, so it's not a big deal. Of all his Nylabone toys, this is the best (and probably his favorite of the bunch). He really likes the size - just right for him to prance around with and show off. Although he's had it for four months, it's still smooth enough in the middle that we can hold it for him comfortably, and it's retained its original shape (unlike dinosaur and branch). If we could just train him not to drop this on our feet when he wants attention(it weighs a few pounds and has gotten a bit pokey on the ends)this would be the perfect toy.

Cute squeaky toy, good price.
Size: Pack of 3, Color: Mini Loofa
These little squeaky toys are one of my yorkie pups favorite. Being latex they are last longer than the material ones. Good price for the 3 pack.
