Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) - Plant Profile
Based on your Horti Tops seed packet, here is the detailed guide for growing your Wormwood, also known as Absinthe.
Description
Wormwood is a hardy, woody-based perennial known for its striking silvery-grey foliage and aromatic properties. While it is the primary ingredient in the famous spirit Absinthe, it is also highly valued in gardens for its unique texture.
-
Appearance: It grows into a bushy, feathery shrub reaching about 60–90 cm in height. The leaves have a soft, silky texture due to fine white hairs.
-
Characteristics: It has a very bitter taste and a strong, pungent scent.
-
Garden Use: It is excellent for "moon gardens" (where silver foliage shines at night) and works well in drought-tolerant or gravel gardens. It is also known to help deter certain garden pests.
Sowing Season
The green circle with the number "3" on your packet indicates that March is the ideal time to begin.
-
Spring (March – May): This is the best time for indoor or sheltered sowing to allow the plant to establish before summer.
-
Late Summer (August – September): You can also sow during this window to allow the plant to establish roots before winter dormancy, leading to a head start the following spring.
Sowing Instructions
Wormwood is relatively easy to grow, but the seeds have specific light requirements.
-
Soil Choice: Use a well-draining, light seed-starting mix. Wormwood prefers slightly poor, sandy soil rather than overly rich earth.
-
Surface Sowing: The seeds are very small and require light to germinate. Scatter them on the surface of the soil and press them down gently with your finger. Do not cover them with soil.
-
Moisture: Mist the soil gently so it remains damp but not soaked. Covering the tray with a clear lid or plastic wrap can help maintain humidity until sprouts appear.
-
Germination: Place the tray in a bright spot at a temperature of roughly 15–20°C. Sprouting usually occurs within 10 to 21 days.
-
Transplanting: Once the seedlings are strong enough to handle and the risk of frost has passed, move them to their permanent home.
-
Spacing: Plant them 45–60 cm apart in a location that receives full sun.
Important Note: Wormwood contains absinthin, a substance that can wash off the leaves into the soil and stunt the growth of neighboring plants (especially fennel, sage, and cloves). It is best to give it its own dedicated space in the garden.
