A mild winter with little snow was followed by a very dry and mild spring. Fortunately, a rainy and cool May followed, so that the urgently needed water reserves could be replenished. The flowering of the vines was slightly delayed by the cool temperatures in April and May.
In the warm summer months of June and July, there was sufficient rainfall, which led to a slightly higher fungal pressure in Peronospora and Oidium. However, major crop losses could be avoided thanks to many years of experience and professional action. A hot spell in August slowed down the ripening of the grapes for a short time. After abundant rainfall at the end of August, late summer was stable and the autumn days were very beautiful. A good harvest, which began on September 4 with Sauvignon Blanc, was the result.
The 2023 vintage presents itself with fresh, fruity wines with slightly lower alcohol levels and can be classified as a good to very good vintage.
The vineyards are located between 250 and 900 meters on a strikingly red-colored porphyry rootstock. It is a volcanic rock with large mineral dispersions, geologically called quartz porphyry. This terroir produces very salty wines with great tension on the palate and exceptional longevity. The orientation of the vineyards to the south ensures strong sunlight. Under almost Mediterranean conditions, a wide range of grape varieties thrive here and you can meet many Mediterranean plants such as olives, pomegranates, cypresses or almond trees in Terlano. During the ripening period, warm days and cool nights guarantee a high content of sugar and aromas as well as the characteristic alpine freshness.
Due to the special climatic and geological conditions, the Terlano area has its own designation of origin with the addition of "Terlaner" in addition to the geographical designation of origin "South Tyrol DOC". "Terlano classic" is the name given to those grape varieties that grow in the classic Terlano area between Andriano, Nalles and Terlano.
The towering peaks of the Alps protect South Tyrol in the north from rough Atlantic northerly currents, while from the south the country is characterized by Mediterranean influences. This results in large temperature differences between day and night, which ensure elegant ripeness.
Mountain groups such as the Adamello also fulfil a protective function to the south. As a result, the annual amount of precipitation is only about a third compared to the southern foothills of the Alps and the intensity of sunlight is higher. These climatic conditions are reminiscent of wine-growing regions such as the Swiss Valais.
When the sun appears behind the eastern mountains of Terlano on one of the 300 days of sunshine, it is already high in the sky. This is because the wine region is oriented south to southwest. Direct solar radiation is higher due to the lower density of the atmosphere, and diffuse radiation is lower at the same time. This increases the difference between sunny and shady slopes.
