The AP Limited Editions Writer Maki-e Fountain Pen - Orbit channels the quiet drama of celestial motion into a refined writing instrument. Luminous flourishes of red, white, and gold sweep across a deep urushi lacquer, evoking planetary paths and the measured grace of an orbit traced in light. The result is poised and contemplative, with artwork that reveals new subtleties as it catches and releases the light.

Craftsmanship & Design

Orbit is realized through traditional maki-e artistry, where multiple coats of urushi lacquer are built up, cured, and polished to create depth, then accented with precious metallic powders to bring the motif to life. The interplay of fine particulates and smooth lacquer produces a surface that feels both graphic and atmospheric, with crisp delineation where the artist intends and a gentle glow where color transitions soften.

The pen follows AP Limited Editions' balanced Writer silhouette, designed to showcase the artwork without distraction. Proportions are thoughtfully resolved for the hand and the eye: clean lines, smooth transitions, and an uninterrupted canvas that allows the Orbit theme to extend gracefully around the cap and barrel. The finish is durable and tactile, with the reassuring warmth that only urushi can offer.

Writing Experience

A 14k gold nib provides the expressive core of the Writer fountain pen. It delivers a smooth, confident line with a pleasant sense of control, allowing the character of your ink to emerge without harshness. Subtle resilience in the gold imparts a touch of responsiveness, supporting both deliberate script and more fluid notes.

The cartridge/converter system offers practical versatility, accommodating bottled inks when you want to explore tonal nuance and easy cartridges when convenience matters. Weight and balance are tuned for long sessions, with a comfortable section that steadies the grip and maintains consistent flow from first line to last.

Provenance

AP Limited Editions has become a sought-after name among collectors for contemporary maki-e creations that respect tradition while pursuing distinctive, narrative-driven themes. Each pen requires patience and technical fluency: urushi layers must cure fully between applications, metallic powders are laid with care, and the final surface is polished to a quiet luster that rewards close viewing. In Orbit, that discipline turns a scientific motif into something contemplative and personal, carried from desk to notebook with a sense of calm precision.

it's kubrick. it's a masterpiece.
i don't really like movies about couples but being kubrick, i gave it a chance. the cinematography is just so incredibly rich, not only with flashy scenes and beautiful colors and framing, but with all these referential easter eggs and nuggets of hints and symbolism and...oh my god it's just RICH. if you like psychological and mystery stuff, and photography, and lurid secret society stuff, this movie is incredible. i will watch it again for sure.

4k blu ray scenes freeze
The movie is good. The 4k blu ray froze at one scene and skipped ahead a few scenes. It makes me sad. Hopefully the blu ray doesn't freeze.

The 4K's Rating
I'm not sure what's going on with this release, as it gets praised by some, condemned by others. Very strange. For me, all the criticism of the colors in some scenes (like the teal & orange bedroom scene) makes no sense, because those colors do not appear as saturated and forceful on my Panasonic 4K player and Samsung 42" 4K TV. They look noticable, as teal and orange naturally clash at any strength. But they don't look entirely unnatural. As for the grain, it iS awful during the initial party scene, to the point of distraction. But as the movie progresses, it seems to weaken. I'm not sure at what exact point the distraction ends, only that I became fully absorbed in the movie before Bill's nocturnal "adventures." (As a matter of note, I don't oversharpen in the settings, and don't bump up saturation.) This rating is for the 4K. I've only watched about 20 minutes of the blu-ray, during which I encountered a 3-4 second sound dropout that was troublesome. As in SILENCE. It's something I intend to contact Criterion about, to see if this is an anomaly (in which case I'll initiated a replacement from Amazon). If it's a general problem, I'll ask Criterion for a blu-ray replacement. I want to watch more of the blu-ray before taking any action, in case there are more dropouts to report. BTW, the blu-ray looks quite good to me, altho I think the 4K is slightly more detailed.
