The Turkish Get Up (TGU) is a time-honoured exercise with a rich history. Its origins can be traced back to Ottoman-era Turkey, where wrestlers, soldiers, and strongmen incorporated it into their physical training regimens. The TGU’s practicality in building functional strength and resilience has ensured its enduring appeal from ancient warriors to today’s strength practitioners.
The TGU is a move like no other, a harmonious blend of strength, mobility, and stability. This movement engages every muscle group—from shoulders to core to legs—while also challenging shoulder stability as you transition through multiple planes of motion whilst maintaining the weight overhead. These fluid transitions of the TGU demand flexibility in the hips, shoulders, and spine.
Great legends of Physical Culture included the TGU in their routines, lifting kettlebells, dumbbells, or even stones during their performances. Today, the TGU remains a cornerstone of kettlebell training and functional fitness, as relevant and beneficial as ever.
