Onitama is a two-player abstract strategy game featuring perfect information and a dynamic setup. Played on a 5x5 board, each player starts with five pawns, including a main pawn positioned centrally.

The game utilizes two open cards for each player, each showing a possible move for their pieces. There is also a fifth card, which is not used by either player. On a turn, a player selects one of their cards, moves a piece according to that card's move, and then replaces the used card with the fifth card. The opponent then chooses one of their cards, makes a move, and swaps their card with the fifth card—now the card the first player used.

Capturing an opponent's pawn removes it from the board, while capturing the opponent's main pawn or moving your main pawn into the starting space of the opponent's main pawn secures victory.
