Slave of Christ: A New Testament Metaphor for Total Devotion to ChristThe New Testament finds many ways to depict Christians' relationships to their Lord. The New Testament finds many ways to depict Christians' relationships to their Lord. They are his disciples, sons, daughters, friends. But it is perhaps too little recognised that they are also his slaves. This study sets out to uncover what it means to be a slave of Christ. Harris begins by assessing the nature of actual slavery in the Greco-Roman world and the New Testament's attitude towards it. Drawing insights from this, he goes on to unfold the metaphor of slavery to Christ. Among the topics discussed are slavery and spiritual freedom, lordship, ownership and privilege.

______________

______________

This book is a thorough and scholarly treatment of the New Testament metaphor of slave of Christ. Harris provides excellent background material on slavery in the Roman world that serves as a backdrop for the biblical use of the metaphor. The introductory chapter explains the rationale for the book well and sets the stage for the rest of the book by listing the occurrences of the expression slave of God in Scripture. Harris’ use of question and answer format throughout the book serves to keep the reader interested in the theme. This book revives the importance and poignancy the slave of Christ theme that has often been lost in modern English translations. Harris writes with clarity, concern, and the necessary sensitivity and balance required by this theme. All of the major texts about slave of Christ are covered with a grammatical precision that is also informed by scholarly reference material. Particularly helpful is the four part explanation of the doulos word group as freedom, lordship, ownership, and privilege. Harris insightfully explains how the slavery to Christ image is a wholly positive—someone who is humble in submission, obedient to the Master’s will, and preoccupied with pleasing Christ (143). Harris also carefully explains the limitations of the metaphor. Harris’ explanation of the life and ministry of Pricilla and Aquila as slaves to Christ is particularly thorough and perceptive. Recovery for Physical & Spiritual Losses!
Format: Paperback, Format: Paperback
9/22/24:God's timing is perfect, as is the timing of the release of this book, as I'm walking through an extended loss period and am ready to move on to the next chapter of my life (nicknamed "Job"). I first learned about this book via an author interview on CBN's "700 Club;" which totally piqued my interest, so I ordered it. Honestly, it was difficult for me to get through the forward & intro; however, I feel like the spirit of "distraction" was fighting me, warring against me taking back what I've lost via God. I powered through (while receiving an amazing amount of info from author), and by the time I got through the first several pages of chapter 1, the author's writing style relaxed, information flow slowed (going from drinking out of a fire hydrant to sipping out of a hose), it's become an easier read, full of great detailed information, scriptures for validation, deeply meaningful prayers & contracts offered as instruments for your recovery- use as weapons & armor against the enemy (if you choose), as well as examples of real life applications & their baffling/astounding results (as a visual learner this helped me visualize how these methods can be applied & worked). Jane Hamon writes this book in a way that you can IMMEDIATELY apply what you've read to your life- no need to wait to the end & tie it up all together with a neat bow. I will be able to apply this to many areas of my life & lives of others. Jane also included several pages of "Notes," enabling you to dig deeper into the various subjects & info the author reviewed for this amazing book. I've already sent this to people I know are suffering & open to hearing this word & immediately apply these prayers, contracts, exercises, etc to their lives. Remember, this IS a WAR FOR YOUR SOUL! Don't let distractions/evil pull you away from working through this towards your victory! I pray you are successful in heavenly replevin recovery, standing in the light of God, with the Holy Spirit riding within your heart, and Christ as your lamp that lights your path. God bless you. THANK YOU JANE HAMON! 9/24/24: To correct MISINFORMATION IN OTHER REVIEWS: In first 2 chapters alone, these Bible versions are specifically quoted: TPT, NIV, NLT, NASB, KJV, ESV, MSG... possibly more, but I just skimmed to bring forward this CORRECT info.
