Fitment Notes
- Jeep Cherokee KK and Jeep Liberty KK are the same vehicle - Liberty was the North American market name, Cherokee was used in most other markets including South Africa. Same chassis, same 3.7 L EKG V6 engine, same cooling system and radiator cap.
- Confirm the engine is the 3.7 L EKG V6 petrol. This cap does not fit the 2.8 L CRD diesel variant of the same KK chassis, which uses a different cooling system specification.
- Always match the pressure rating stamped on your existing cap before fitting a replacement.
- Replace the radiator cap whenever you replace a radiator, water pump, thermostat, or after any significant cooling system repair. A worn cap seal is a common cause of cooling system problems.
- The radiator cap maintains system pressure (raising the coolant boiling point) and relieves excess pressure via a spring-loaded valve. A failed cap can cause overheating, boil-over, or coolant loss via the overflow even when the system is topped up.
- Never remove a radiator cap while the engine is hot. Pressurised hot coolant can cause severe burns.
- Check the neck sealing surface on the radiator for corrosion, debris or damage before fitting the new cap. A damaged neck can cause the new cap to leak even if the cap itself is sound.
Installation / Use / Maintenance Tips
- Ensure the engine is cold before removing the old cap. Wait at least one hour after driving or until the upper radiator hose is cool to the touch.
- Inspect the rubber seal on the underside of the new cap - it must be intact, flexible, and free of cuts or deformation.
- Wipe the radiator neck clean and inspect for corrosion, pitting or damage. Clean with a lint-free rag before fitting the new cap.
- Fit the cap by pressing down and turning clockwise until fully seated. Do not cross-thread.
- Top up coolant to the correct level using the coolant type specified by Jeep / Chrysler for the EKG engine.
- Run the engine to operating temperature with the heater set to maximum after fitting, to bleed air from the system. Check coolant level after the first heat cycle and top up if needed.
Common Questions
Is Cherokee KK the same as Liberty KK?
Yes. Jeep Liberty was the North American market name for the KK-generation vehicle (2008-2012). In South Africa and most other markets the same vehicle was sold as the Jeep Cherokee. Same platform, engine, and cooling system - this cap fits both.
Will this cap fit the 2.8 L CRD diesel Cherokee?
Not automatically - the CRD diesel KK has a different cooling system specification, and cap compatibility should be verified separately. Contact us with your VIN if you have the diesel variant and need confirmation.
What symptoms indicate a failing radiator cap?
Common symptoms include: overheating or temperature gauge climbing under load, coolant loss with no visible leak, coolant appearing in the expansion tank overflow, white crusty residue around the cap seal, hissing from the cap area when the engine is warm, or a perished / hardened rubber seal on inspection.
How do I confirm fitment?
Verify the engine code (EKG) and vehicle chassis (KK) match. The engine code is stamped on the cylinder block and also listed on the vehicle placard. If in doubt, send us your VIN for verification.
