John Alden was among some of America's most talented yacht designers and from the 1900's to 1955, Alden's firm, John G. Alden Naval Architects, supplied the American yachtsman with thousands of excellent boats, ranging from dinghies to large offshore cruising yachts. This model kit has been created by permission from this same firm using the original drawings.
The Sakonnet was originally designed in 1937 for the Sakonnet Yacht Club, located in Little Compton, Rhode Island. It was created for use as a "one design" racer for the yacht club. The practice of having a specific boat designed for a club to be used in racing was very popular in the 30's. In fact, John Alden owned and raced this design during his illustnous career. There was even some controversy concerning Mr. Alden's personal boat, as he won so many races with it during the 1939 racing season, competitors accused him of running a custom boat To resolve the controversy, he exchanged boats with another club skipper who had been having less than good results and proceeded to win using the other boat.
As pretty to look at as she was to sail, the Sakonnet features a heavy displacement hull with a deep keel for additional stability, high freeboard for a dry rtde, modest sail area, and a spacious open cockpit area. This cockpit area is protected by high coarnings and watertight bulkheads fore and aft, providing a very safe daysailer. The modem marconi rig round out the overall look of this classic sailboat.

Homer's Iliad, Books 1-12
Format: Hardcover
This is a wonderful adjunct to any text for anyone interested in Homeric Greek.
It reads well in and of itself and seems to be highly accurate.
Of course I recommend it.

Good standard pony
Format: Hardcover
I recommend this book for scholars who want to read the original Greek but don't want the burden of translating. I like the small size of the book that can be toted around to the doctor's and on an airplane. There are enough notes on difficult passages to make the casual reader aware of the specialist's debate.

what most people want in a loeb library book
Format: Hardcover
The language and translation are fine. I was hoping for an unabridged version with nothing left out. Not so, I am pretty sure there is more that has been expurgated. I might be wrong
