One of the upgrades was the release of the Variable Vane Turbo from Garrett. This turbo had the ability to act both like a smaller framed turbo, as well as a larger because of its ability to internally expand and contract because of variable vanes within the turbo. Unfortunately, this design saw several downfalls, mostly in that the vanes were prone to getting stuck in a single position due to soot accumulation. Over the years, Garrett managed to refine these turbos and their tolerances to make them live a long and happy life. While Garrett may have made improvements to these turbos, many truck owners were left with the original designs and warranties that have long since expired.
