What it's used for
- Waterproofing apex and pent roofed garden sheds
- Roofing summerhouses, workshops and garden rooms
- Covering animal shelters, kennels and poultry housing
- Re-felting existing outbuilding roofs where the original felt has cracked or lifted
Fitting and handling
For best results, fix over a suitable timber or OSB substrate, laying a compatible underlay first and nailing it firmly before the mineral felt goes on top. Secure the felt mechanically using galvanised clout nails and maintain a minimum 75 mm lap at all joints, sealing each lap thoroughly with felt adhesive to achieve a weathertight finish. Store rolls flat and dry before installation, and avoid working in temperatures below 5 degrees Celsius as cold conditions make the felt brittle and harder to lay cleanly.
FAQ
What is the difference between light, medium and heavy shed felt?
The grade refers to the weight and thickness of the felt. Medium grade offers a practical balance between cost and durability for most domestic garden buildings. Heavy grade is better suited to structures with longer spans or roofs exposed to harsh weather, while light grade is typically used only on very small, sheltered buildings.
Do I need felt adhesive as well as clout nails?
Yes. Clout nails hold the felt to the substrate, but the laps between sheets must be sealed with felt adhesive to stop water tracking underneath at the overlaps. Using both together is the correct method and is required to achieve a weathertight finish.
How many metres of felt do I need for a standard garden shed?
It depends on your shed dimensions and roof type. As a rough guide, a 6 ft x 4 ft apex shed typically requires around 4 to 5 metres once laps are accounted for, making the 5 m roll sufficient for most small sheds. Larger sheds, or those with separate roof sections, usually need the 10 m roll.
If you are re-roofing a shed, you may also need a new deck to felt onto. Nottage Timber Merchants stocks OSB sheets suitable for shed roofing, available for collection from our Bridgend yard or on next-day delivery across the South Wales area.
