A stunning example of an ammonite fossil of the species Psiloceras planorbis from North Somerset, UK.
The piece of limestone matrix measures 198 mm (7.8 inches) across and contains two complete ammonites, the largest of which measures 63 mm (2.5 inches) across, which is a very good size for this species. The matrix is original and has been shaped for display with a flat base to allow it to stand by itself and includes some bivalve shells and other partial ammonite shells. The ammonites are perfectly preserved and have been prepared out of the rock to reveal the shells, which display some beautiful pearlescence with different colours appearing as the angle the fossil is viewed from changes.
The fossil weighs 768 grams. These ammonites make wonderful display items and are real conversation starters.
Around 200 million years old (Hettangian, Early Jurassic), this fossil would make a wonderful addition to any collection.
