Your pool filter takes care of a lot of fairly icky things. For instance, the human body sheds about 0.003 ounces of skin flakes every hour. That doesn't seem like a lot, but consider how many people use your pool and how long they're in it. Chlorine may kill the algae and bacteria in your pool, but it doesn't do anything against the chemical residue that suntan lotions and hairspray leave. That's where the filter comes in. It chugs along and gets rid of all of that every day. To keep it going, you need to take care of it properly. That means rinsing it once per week and inspecting it to make sure the core of the filter isn't damaged. You'll also need to swap it out every one to two years for peak efficiency.
