Biological filter media
The primary function of biological filter media is to create optimal conditions for the growth of bacterial cultures, allowing a bacterial lawn to establish quickly. These bacteria consume various dirt particles and transform substances that could be harmful to the aquarium.
After the initial cleaning phase with mechanical filter media (such as EHEIM MECH or MECHpro), biological filtration is crucial. It guarantees clear, healthy water and stable water parameters. This is why we have dedicated substantial research efforts to the advancement of biological filter media.
Tip: Avoid cleaning or replacing all biological filter media at once (and refrain from excessive cleaning). It's vital to preserve the bacterial cultures, as complete destruction would delay re-colonization. The filter baskets in external filters and the filter modules in the aquaball and biopower internal filters are perfect for partial cleaning.
