William R. Bliss, a writer who visited Hawaii in the 1870s, wrote this evocative and vivid account of life on the island; how the native people lived day-to-day and traded with the Americans with whom they became close.

An excellent account of historic Hawaii, Paradise in the Pacific offers a detailed and clear portrait of how life was. Bliss is keen to brief the reader on the history of the isles; particularly its kings, and how the peoples arrived and settled in what were then termed the 'Sandwich Islands'. Bliss demonstrates that all parts of Hawaii's culture, from its festivals to its courtrooms to its domestic life, are affected by old beliefs.

The author seeks accuracy; the darker side of Hawaiian life, such as the segregated villages where leprosy is prominent, receive mention. Volcanic eruptions and destruction which changed the landscape are discussed. Lightheartedly, we hear about the islands' politics; disputatious yet lively, with populism and appeals to traditional values commonplace.

Tiny print
Format: Hardcover
I bought this as a gift. She loves it, but the print is terribly small and the hard cover won't lay flat. I'm going to return it and order one that she can read without glasses and a magnifying glass.

Meaningful curriculum that I highly recommend.
Format: Paperback
Heard about this book from a friend who is a teacher. Her entire school is using this curriculum and seeing great results. I bought a copy and the poster set to try for myself. Students loved it! We had amazing discussions and my students' kindness level increased by 100 percent. I appreciate that there is a curriculum for public schools that takes the students to a deeper level of understanding about themselves and others. More of my colleagues are interested in this material and I think we will be doing a book study soon. Hoping it will be adopted by our curriculum department for the entire district. Pros: Easy to use,, researched based (not fluffy), poster set to support, nice work pages for students to use during the lesson, age appropriate, meaningful connections made between myself, students and between the students and their families. Well received by community. Cons: Lessons were slightly longer than 35 minutes but I added my own activities for additional interest. Not a good curriculum for educators who only want to focus on academics.

Love this for my class!

I use this with my high school students with slight modifications. Great for little kids. Great to use when learning about your new students so you can show appreciation for your students in a productive way.
