Vinyl LP pressing. Rickie Lee Jones is the debut album by singer-songwriter Rickie Lee Jones. After arriving in California in the mid-1970s, Jones started taking songwriting more seriously, and by 1977 had met singer-songwriters Chuck E. Weiss and Tom Waits (Jones consequently became romantically involved with Waits). Jones had begun playing live in the Los Angeles area at the age of 21, and after meeting singer-songwriter Alfred Johnson, the pair began writing and performing live together (most notably at the Ala Carte club.) At a label showcase, Jones performed originals, including "Chuck E.'s in Love", "The Real Thing Is Back in Town" and "The Moon Is Made of Gold." This showcase performance, plus a demo containing "The Last Chance Texaco", "Easy Money", "Young Blood" and "After Hours" led to a record deal with Warner Bros.. For her major label debut, Jones scrapped "The Real Thing Is Back in Town," but used the titular line in one of the album's tracks - "Coolsville."

Interesting but limited

A tale of sound and fury signifying... what? There's a lot going on. A lot of pretty pictures. But at the end of the volume you don't really know anything. Won't be buying volume 2.

A Great Starting Point / What The Readers Want

This is the Spider-Man comic I have been waiting a decade for. For some reason with Marvel Comics these days there is a mindset that Peter Parker and Mary Jane cannot be happy by staying married together ever since the release of the terrible storyline One More Day. Nick Spencer almost undid this terrible decision but was prevented from doing so.
The series gives readers exactly what they want by starting it off with Peter and MJ already married and with kids. This is a brand new continuity that is separate from the old Ultimate universe that welcomes readers with a new starting point. Peter is not yet established as Spider-Man and the story is about him gaining his powers while he is an older and more mature individual. There are quite a few surprises that I will not spoil, but it will demonstrate how this is not the same universe as the original 616 universe.
I have to hand it to Jonathan Hickman as he is a great writer that is able to grab the attention of his audience and keep them invested in what happens next. This was apparent on his previous runs with Avengers and New Avengers. Also, the art by Marco Checchetto is top tier as this man is one of the best artists working in the comic industry currently at this time. Check out this comic if you are looking to read a good Spider-Man series.

Best Spider-Man book out there!

I really enjoyed this first volume of ultimate Spider-Man. As a (sort of) adult myself I love the new twist on the origin with Peter being a grown ass man with in his mid to late 30s with a career & young family when he gets the the powers this time instead of geeky teenager who is perpetually in his 20s in the 696 Marvel universe. Really enjoy the different take on Green Goblin as well and looking forward to seeing how everything plays out with the whole mission and greater conflict laid out in this book. The artwork is stellar and the writing is really sharp and crisp. Peter has never been more likable & charismatic and MJ & Gwen Stacey have never looked hotter. I could not recommend this book highly enough if you are a Spider-Man fan. As a matter of fact I enjoyed this book so much that I read it twice which I very rarely do.

The Spider-Man We Didn't Know We Needed

Ultimate Spider-Man (2024) Vol. 1 is the breath of fresh air the franchise needed. Instead of the familiar wide-eyed teenager, we get a Peter Parker in his mid-30s - a husband, a father, and a man already carrying the weight of the world before he ever puts on a suit. That added dimension makes him instantly more compelling.
The family dynamics, while central to the premise, don't always land with the emotional weight they deserve. It's a minor gripe in an otherwise confident debut.
Hickman deserves credit for sidestepping decades of continuity baggage and reimagining beloved characters in arcs that feel genuinely new. For longtime fans and newcomers alike, this is a worthy read.
