While not a fixative, specimens can be held at room temperature for five days in transport medium before processing. This simple salt solution maintains pH, but does not kill most pathogens. Specimens received in transport medium should be washed in three changes of Michels Wash Solution (10 minutes for each wash). Not suitable for FISH
