Petrified wood is a form of fossilized wood where the organic material has been replaced with minerals. In these petrified wood stem slices, the organic material has been replaced with chalcedony: an opaque, colorful, cryptocrystalline form of quartz.

When well-formed, the minerals replicate the natural structure of the wood so that the rings, striations, and cell pattern are preserved. The palette is typically warm tones of red, brown, and yellow, but it can range into green or a bold contrast of black, grays, and white. Option L gets the ugly duckling discount for having no discernible pattern.

These slices have been polished on one side to best reveal their pattern, but left rough on the remainder of the piece. Details of the wood surface pattern and knots can be made out on the sides, and some pieces have hollow cores. Not all pieces sit flat due to the natural base.
