About the Bowie Series: Los Angeles, 1990s, in my Venice Beach studio—I was preparing shoots for Vogue Hommes when I received a call from Ingrid Sischy in New York: she wanted me to photograph David Bowie for Interview magazine. I was thrilled—my first record had been Bowie’s Diamond Dogs, a gift from my stepfather.
At the Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills, I joined the production team, including Paul Starr (makeup) and Kim Bowen (styling). When Bowie arrived in a sharp suit, I told him he looked like a fashion icon straight out of a Luchino Visconti film. He smiled, revealing his love for Italian neorealist cinema.
What struck me most were his hypnotic, mismatched eyes—they seemed to look right through me. The session lasted an hour, and it was exhilarating. In these portraits, I aimed to capture Bowie as a character straight from Visconti’s Death in Venice.
