Musashi was sunk during the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October 1944, hit by an extraordinary concentration of US carrier aircraft — believed to be between 17 and 20 torpedo and bomb hits before she finally capsized. Her wreck was discovered in the Philippine Sea in 2015.
