Released in 1989 by the well-known audiophile label Chesky Records , Portraits It is a testament to the prodigious talent of the legendary trumpeter, flugelhornist and jazz teacher Clark Terry The first of four albums for the Chesky label, Portraits was recorded when the St. Louis-born trumpeter, then 68, was a revered jazz veteran. At the time, he had released 35 albums and boasted a resume that included stellar collaborations with Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, Quincy Jones, and Dizzy Gillespie. For Portraits, produced by David Chesky , Terry assembled a quartet consisting of the pianist Don Friedman , from the bassist Victor Gaskin and from the drummer Lewis Nash . With Terry alternating between flugelhorn and muted trumpet, and also showing off his occasional vocal chops, the quartet moves effortlessly through a mix of familiar jazz standards, such as " Pennies From Heaven " and Terry's original song, " Finger Filibuster ", in which he showcases his athletic scat singing. Other standout tracks include " When It's Sleepy Time Down South ", Louis Armstrong's favorite song, and " Sugar Blues ", a nostalgic tribute to New Orleans jazz. The album was reissued in 180g One Step Pressing LP vinyl in 2025.
