Ferguson M-Series Bass Trombone Mouthpieces with Remington-Style Long ShankThis is the remaining stock of two sizes of Ferguson bass trombone mouthpieces which have a longer shank and slightly different shank taper called the Brown & Sharp taper, versus the more common Morse taper. These are more akin to older Schilke mouthpieces. These aren't quite as long as the old Schilkes, but in that direction. This is the remaining stock of two sizes of Ferguson bass trombone mouthpieces which have a longer shank and slightly different shank taper called the Brown & Sharp taper, versus the more common Morse taper. These are more akin to older Schilke mouthpieces. These aren't quite as long as the old Schilkes, but in that direction.
These mouthpieces are our best replicas of classic designs by master brass maker Larry Minick, inspired by a request from Los Angeles Philharmonic bass trombonist Jeff Reynolds back in the day. These were especially popular in the Hollywood recording scene, with Phil Teele, Bill Reichenbach, and many others using this style of mouthpiece.
This particular variation of these mouthpieces is useful in at least two situations:
- You have an older 1960's-era Conn bass trombone whose receiver is the "Remington style". This would include Conn 60H, 62H, 70H, 71H, 62H, 73H. Note that newer models such as 110H, 112H and 2000's-era Ohio 62H use a modern standard Morse taper and do not need a mouthpiece like this.
- You have a bass trombone that plays a bit sharp and you need to pull the main tuning slide fairly far out. Some Getzen and Edwards models can feel like this if you're not used to playing with extended positions (where you float first position out 1-2cm).
Made in Utah by master mouthpiece maker James New, each mouthpiece in the Ferguson line has a different outer shape and outer rim diameter for comfort and efficiency. These rims are slightly rounder on the inner edge than many others, so they may feel wider than the dimensions indicate.
Ferguson V with Long Shank
A bass trombone mouthpiece in a New York 1.5G size, V shaped cup, for players wanting a smaller, most efficient bass trombone mouthpiece but with a wide comfortable rim, based on my Minick V, cup diameter 27.4 mm, feels wider.
Ferguson L with Long Shank
Based on the classic Minick L size bass trombone mouthpiece made around 1993-1994, as used by by many studio and symphonic players. This is a large 1 1/4G sized mouthpiece with a heavier blank and a wide comfortable rim. Cup diameter 28.1 mm feels wider.
