Gonolobus cyclophyllusGonolobus cyclophyllus (also known as Matelea cyclophylla) is a fascinating caudiciform vine native to Mexico, prized by collectors for its sculptural, corky caudex and delicate seasonal vines. The caudex can reach up to about 8 inches (20 centimeters) in diameter and is covered in soft, cork like tubercles that give it a textured, natural look. From this swollen base emerge slender, deciduous vines that can climb or trail up to 36 feet (12 meters)
Gonolobus cyclophyllus (also known as Matelea cyclophylla) is a fascinating caudiciform vine native to Mexico, prized by collectors for its sculptural, corky caudex and delicate seasonal vines. The caudex can reach up to about 8 inches (20 centimeters) in diameter and is covered in soft, cork-like tubercles that give it a textured, natural look. From this swollen base emerge slender, deciduous vines that can climb or trail up to 3–6 feet (1–2 meters) long, producing heart-shaped green leaves during the growing season. The plant’s small, star-shaped flowers—typically burgundy to brown or greenish in color—often emit a faint carrion-like scent that attracts fly pollinators. Native to limestone and volcanic cliffs of western Mexico, Gonolobus cyclophyllus thrives in bright, indirect light and well-draining soil, requiring moderate watering during active growth and very little moisture during dormancy, when the vines die back and leave the caudex exposed. It's unusual combination of a sculptural base, ephemeral foliage, and intriguing flowers makes it a striking and collectible species among lovers of caudiciform and succulent plants.
Gonolobus cyclophyllus is a deciduous caudex-forming plant that usually drops its leaves and enters dormancy during the cooler, lower-light seasons, such as fall and winter. During this period, it should be kept dry, since it requires minimal water without leaves and is susceptible to root rot.
Please Note: Plant will ship bare root with little to no dirt, you will receive a plant similar to the one in the photo. Plant may or may not be in vine. Fragile: leaves may curl, fall off, or bruise during shipping. Will recover with proper light, water, and leaf shedding.
