Within these pages author Anthony Poulton-Smith examines the origins of the West Sussex place names with which we are otherwise so familiar. The definitions are supported by anecdotal evidence and show what has influenced the way the names have developed.

Ever wondered why our towns and villages are named as they are? Who named them and why? Was there really a look-out point at Warningcamp? Did the Anchor Bleu public house once boast a French landlord? What is a gribble as seen in the Gribble Inn?

Which town declared itself independent in 1965? Towns, villages, districts, hills, streams, woods, farms, fields, streets and even pubs are examined and explained.

Some of the definitions give a glimpse of life in the earlier days of the settlement, and for the author there is nothing more satisfying than finding a name which gives such a snapshot.

This is not simply a dictionary but a history and will prove invaluable not only for those who live and work in the county but also visitors and tourists, indeed anyone with an interest in West Sussex.

About the Author

Anthony Poulton-Smith is now a full time author after a career in engineering. He has had many books published on the history of Britain.

Beautiful but terrible quality.
While I absolutely loved the idea of cutting boards with a stand, these were not the right choice. The wood is exceptionally soft and after the first use the gouges from my knife were pretty deep. After I washed the cutting board from cutting veggies, it started to splinter. Maybe I just got a defective set but I definitely do not recommend this set. Will be returning and getting a different brand/board.

A unique treatise
Format: Paperback
I've read part way through this book at this point, reading it together with a friend. It provides plenty material for discussion. It seems to me to be aimed at a seminary audience, as there are some theological and Greek grammatical terms used, but not fully explained. It's not quick reading, but it makes up for that in the unique content. The content is to take a dozen key passages whose interpretation has varied over the last couple thousand years, and show exactly how these interpretations have varied. The title of the book, "...in Full Circle" refers to the idea that some contemporary interpretations have more in common with the most ancient church fathers than they do with their immediate predecessors over the last four or five hundred years. All in all, it's a fascinating way of looking at scripture - through the eyes of influential authors over the course of almost twenty centuries.
