Learn to understand and adapt sewing patterns with confidence
Have you ever opened up a sewing pattern and felt completely overwhelmed?
All those lines, symbols, and instructions… and somehow you’re meant to turn that into clothes that fit your body.
It can feel like a bit of a mystery.
This two-day workshop is here to gently unravel that for you.
We’ll take the time to understand what’s really going on behind the paper, so you can begin to approach sewing patterns with confidence rather than confusion — and start making them work for you.
What this workshop is about
This is a practical, hands-on workshop designed to help you feel more confident using and adapting commercial sewing patterns.
Rather than simply following instructions, you’ll begin to understand how patterns are constructed, how they relate to your body, and how you can make small changes to improve the fit and feel of your garments.
You’ll be working with your own pattern throughout the workshop, so everything you learn is directly relevant to you.
What you’ll learn
Over the two days, we’ll cover:
-
How to read and understand commercial sewing patterns
-
What all those symbols, lines, and markings actually mean
-
How garments are constructed from flat pattern pieces
-
How to choose the right size and interpret sizing
-
Understanding ease and how it affects fit
-
Simple adjustments to improve fit (length, shaping, proportions)
-
How to begin adapting patterns to suit your style
Everything is broken down into manageable steps, with plenty of time to ask questions and try things out for yourself.
What you’ll be doing
This is very much a hands-on workshop.
You’ll be:
-
Working directly with your chosen sewing pattern
-
Tracing and preparing your pattern pieces
-
Making simple, guided adjustments
-
Sampling and testing key elements in fabric
-
Beginning to understand how your pattern translates into a garment
The focus is not on rushing to complete a finished piece, but on building confidence and understanding, so you can go on to make clothes more independently at home.
Who this workshop is for
This workshop is perfect if you:
-
Feel confused or overwhelmed by sewing patterns
-
Have made a few garments but aren’t sure how or why they work
-
Want to feel more confident choosing and using patterns
-
Would like to start adapting patterns to suit your body and style
Some basic sewing experience is helpful, but you don’t need any pattern cutting experience.
What you’ll leave with
By the end of the workshop, you’ll have:
-
A much clearer understanding of how sewing patterns work
-
A pattern that has been adjusted and prepared for you
-
Practical skills you can use straight away at home
-
Greater confidence in your sewing and decision-making
And, perhaps most importantly, that feeling of things starting to make sense.
What to bring
-
A simple commercial sewing pattern (top, blouse or loose dress is ideal)
-
Calico or similar fabric for testing and sampling
-
Basic sewing kit (pins, scissors, tape measure, notebook)
-
Your sewing machine if you’d prefer to use your own (PAT tested please)
Choosing your pattern
Please keep your pattern simple and manageable.
Good options include:
-
Simple tops or blouses
-
Loose-fitting dresses
-
Minimal seams and panels
It’s best to avoid:
-
Tailored garments (jackets, coats)
-
Very fitted styles
-
Complex construction
If you’re unsure, you’re very welcome to email me a photo of your pattern before the workshop, I’m always happy to help.
A note from Jules
This is a relaxed, supportive workshop where you can take your time and really begin to understand what you’re doing.
There’s no pressure to get everything perfect, just space to learn, explore, and build your confidence.
I’ll be there to guide you every step of the way.
