André Girard a œuvré pendant plus de dix-sept ans dans les bibliothèques universitaires et a ensuite enseigné le français et la littérature au Cégep de Chicoutimi. Il fut lauréat du prix Robert-Cliche du premier roman pour Deux semaines en septembre (Les Quinze, 1991), du prix littéraire du CRSBP Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean pour Orchestra (VLB éditeur, 1994), ainsi que du prix Canada-Japon pour Marcher le silence. Carnets du Japon, qu’il a cosigné avec André Duhaime (Leméac, 2006). 

Titulaire d’un doctorat en études littéraires, lauréat du prix Victor-Martyn-Lynch-Staunton attribué pour la qualité de son oeuvre, André Girard s’offrait à l’automne 2009 un séjour prolongé dans la capitale nippone. Tokyo Imperial est le troisième volet de ce que l’auteur appelle sa « suite hôtelière » amorcée avec Port-Alfred Plaza (prix Abitibi-Consol), puis avec Moscou Cosmos, tous deux parus chez Québec Amérique.
