This exquisite matcha bowl is an authentic work by renowned Tairei Tokimatsu, Tairei Kiln, crafted in the distinguished Hagi ware tradition. Hagi yaki is one of Japan's most celebrated pottery styles, treasured by tea ceremony practitioners for over 400 years for its soft, porous clay and evolving beauty that deepens with use.
Authentic Hagi Ware Characteristics:
This chawan embodies the signature qualities that make Hagi pottery so prized in Japanese tea culture. The bowl features the characteristic soft, warm glaze in gentle earth tones—pale cream, soft gray-blue, and warm amber that flow together in organic gradations. The subtle throwing lines visible on the exterior create a tactile, meditative quality. Most distinctively, the exposed foot and lower body reveal Hagi's famous "kan-nyu" (crazing), where the russet-colored clay shows through the translucent glaze in beautiful speckled patterns.
About Hagi Ware:
Produced in Yamaguchi Prefecture since the 16th century, Hagi yaki is one of Japan's most revered pottery traditions. The tea master Sen no Rikyū famously praised Hagi ware, and it has been the preferred choice for tea ceremony bowls for centuries. The soft, absorbent clay creates a gentle, warm feel in the hand and develops a beautiful patina over years of use.
The Seven Transformations (Hagi no Nanabake):
Hagi ware is famous for its ability to change over time through use, known as "Hagi no nanabake" or the seven transformations of Hagi. The porous clay absorbs tea, gradually altering the color and deepening the character of the piece. The visible iron-rich spots on the foot and body will become more pronounced with each tea ceremony, creating a unique patina that tells the story of your tea journey.
Traditional Chawan Form:
The bowl features the classic Japanese tea bowl silhouette with gently flared walls, a generous opening ideal for whisking matcha, and a perfectly proportioned height. The substantial footed base provides both stability and comfortable handling during tea ceremony, while the wide rim allows for proper tea preparation.
Glaze Artistry:
The glaze displays beautiful variations characteristic of Hagi ware—soft blue-gray tones blend into warm beige and cream, with hints of golden amber. The partially glazed foot reveals the natural stoneware body with its distinctive russet coloring and natural ash effects from the kiln firing.
Artist Signature:
This piece bears the mark of the artist, certifying its authenticity as a work of this respected Hagi ware.
Perfect For:
Traditional Japanese tea ceremony (chanoyu/chado), daily matcha preparation, or as a collector's piece of authentic Japanese ceramic art.
