From your walled city, you are a medieval feudal lord who rules the surrounding lands, settlements, and properties granted by birthright. This is your fief, and all that is in it is faithful to you above all others and true to you. Each lord and lady rules a neighboring fief and competes for resources in the unclaimed but plentiful lands of the countryside between them.

Tensions are high and petty feuds arise between you and your neighbors until scouts report a new and deadly threat. Invaders have invaded from the east! Their vast army is camped on the edges of your empire, and this new common enemy endangers the entire country. Refugees from the fallen eastern countries seek shelter and bring with them stories of destruction. Old rivalries must be put aside to focus on the coming onslaught and remain unbroken.

After The Empire is a worker placement/resource management game set in the Middle Ages. During each turn, known as a season, players alternately use worker tokens to perform actions such as gathering resources, building advanced buildings, and recruiting refugees. Once all workers have been deployed, players harvest food from their surrounding lands and prepare for battle.

During each season's battles, invader cards are revealed, showing a random number of troops and a compass direction of attack. Only the richest castles will attract the attention of larger forces and their siege weapons. You must repair your city and recruit and arm your troops quickly to have a chance. The winner is the lord or lady who best preserved their fief and collected the most gold.
