Der Kilt ist vielleicht das bekannteste schottische Kleidungsstück, aber er ist nur eines von vielen traditionellen Kleidungsstücken, die in Schottland über die Jahrhunderte hinweg getragen wurden. Die frühesten Beispiele schottischer Kleidung gehen auf die Bronzezeit zurück, als die Menschen begannen, Kleidung aus karierter Wolle herzustellen. Während der Eisenzeit wurde Tartan immer beliebter, und zur Zeit der römischen Eroberung war Tartan ein wesentlicher Bestandteil der schottischen Kultur. In den folgenden Jahrhunderten wurde der Tartan weiterhin häufig verwendet und zunehmend mit der Kultur der Highlands in Verbindung gebracht. Im 19. Jahrhundert galt der Tartan als Symbol der schottischen Identität und wurde von vielen als Nationaltracht übernommen. Auch heute noch ist Tartan ein wichtiger Bestandteil der schottischen Kultur und wird von Schotten in der ganzen Welt mit Stolz getragen.
